Most supporters of the era can remember Barnet’s Conference winning squad heroes – Gary Bull, Andy Clarke, David Howell, Harry Willis etc. However Barry Fry did have a huge squad available to him that season and there were a few unsung heroes including Tony Lynch.

Lynch joined the club from Wealdstone for a big £15,000 fee in the September 1990 and actually remained at the club for nearly four seasons. An out and out winger with pace and tricks he had made an unforgettable debut scoring with his first touch of the ball and added another goal to the total within minutes in the 8-1 drubbing of Fisher Athletic at Underhill. Tony’s appearances for the club would probably have doubled had it not been for the arrival of Paul Showler in 1991. He remained loyal to the club through the difficult summer of 1993 and was outstanding in the Cup games that season at Southend and Chelsea. His best goal - surely the dipping 35 yarder at home to Doncaster Rovers in February 1993? Hold on though, what about the wonder strike when QPR came along in September 1993 in the League Cup? “Don’t Flinch It’s” Tony Lynch certainly knew where the goal was given the chance.

As Christmas 1990 approached the club surprisingly were on a poor run of form and desperately needed a victory to get back on track. The lads delivered it at Yeovil’s new (and then still incomplete) Huish Park. The team had an unfamiliar look with Wayne Turner running the midfield alongside Paul Richardson and Hakan Hayrettin. 

After sustained pressure the Bees took the lead after 22 minutes. A perfectly weighted Gary Bull pass allowed Lynch to volley home with style. As ever Gary Phillips performed acrobatics in the Bees goal to keep the score to 1-0 at the interval.

Within 10 minutes of the restart they were 3-0 up and Lynch had bagged a quality hatrick. A brilliant Bull flick-on left Lynch clear at half way. Accelerating clear of the defence he finished with a precise cross shot wide of Bond in the Greens goal. The inch perfect lob for his third goal was thanks again to Bull and Andy Clarke’s brilliance in the set up. Unfortunately a knee injury ended Lynch’s involvement in the game after an hour and Willis replaced him. He quite rightly took the applause from the Barnet Army with a huge smile on his face while being helped off. Not to be outdone Clarke crashed the ball home to complete the Barnet scoring before Robbie Carroll grabbed a last minute consolation for Yeovil.
